Ateneo Gabay held the 6th Ateneo Scholars’ Week: PLUNGE last March 28-April 1. Throughout the week, different events were held.
Perspektibo: A Forum on Scholars
After its initial postponement on March 28, 2016, Scholars’ Forum 2016: PERSPEKTIBO finally pushed through on April 3, 2016. This year’s Scholars’ Forum has the central theme of education, with an emphasis on the educational system and experiences in the Philippines. Seventy-one (71) attendees comprised of Gabayanos, scholars, and InTACT freshmen listened to the talks delivered by Mr. Arvin Boller, a psychology instructor in the Ateneo de Manila, and Ms. Kristin Nuyda, a member of Teach For the Philippines, a non-profit organization in the education sector of the Philippines. Prof. Boller discussed his research on education as an economic issue, a humanistic discourse, and a moral enterprise. He concluded with a vision of a society where the word scholarship, rather than referring to a beneficiary of free education, returns to its original meaning of a student who learns with rigor and excellence, because education is already free in this society. Ms. Nuyda shared her experience as a teacher in a public elementary school in Cagayan de Oro, and the real difficulties of teaching. After the talks delivered by the two speakers, the floor was opened to the audience for questions and clarifications.
Scholars’ Thanksgiving Mass
The Scholars’ Mass was presided by former Ateneo president Father Bienvenido Nebres, S.J. A total of sixty-two (62) students and faculty members attended the mass. Father Ben’s homily focused on the importance of being present for one another during times of happiness and sadness. The thanksgiving mass was held in the College Chapel on March 30, 2016.
Scholars’ Night was the culminating activity of Scholars’ Week. Scholars from different batches bonded together over fun parlor games that was facilitated by the core team and volunteer scholars. It was a Hawaiian themed event held at the University Dorm Roofdeck. Dinner was served and items from sponsors were given away as raffle prizes. There were also engaging performances from GADS (Gabay Dancers), GaBand (the musicians of Gabay) and invited performers from Ateneo Musician’s Pool. There was a total of 148 scholars who attended the event which was held on April 1, 2016.
The Scholars’ Lounge was a week-long (March 28-April 1) event with different booths located in the Zen Garden. It gave scholars an opportunity to hang out, purchase merchandise, and be more involved in the advocacy of education and scholarship through our partner organizations. Scholars’ Lounge had Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) and the National Youth Commission (NYC) as partners in sharing our advocacy of education. PBEd promoted their opportunities for sponsored further studies in education, while NYC recruited students to join national and international leadership summits. This year’s Scholars’ Lounge was the first time that external organizations were invited to take part of the project.
